Description

Black Dog, Book 1Half-bloods with Thierry’s skill set are given two options. They can join the conclave’s marshal program, or they can pack their bags. Turn down the job offer, and you’ve just shredded your residency pass for the mortal realm and booked yourself a one-way ticket to Faerie.Texas is the only home Thierry has ever known, and she’s not going anywhere. Even if it means following in her notorious father’s footsteps as a peacekeeper. But pinning on the badge opens her eyes to the fact sometimes fae need protection too, and that sometimes humans are the real monsters.

This book was worth every minute spent reading it! I finished as satisfied as if it had been a full length novel, more satisfied actually, than with some novels I have read. This is no light read. There is action from start to finish which the author uses to efficiently show us who these people are, their world, and their growth as they experience the challenges and dangers of their work. There's a nice little nod to a classic read--Dune--among the fantastical creatures of their world. The pacing is excellent and there is no telling, it's all showing, with a satisfying scatter of backstory comments. There is an impressive amount of character development, realistic emotion, and world building for a novella. The plot is not skimpy in the least, with plenty of red herrings, twists and turns. There is plenty of magic at work throughout the story and the author shows us the inside view: what it is like for them to experience these abilities. It is a mostly (~95%) clean read. There's minimal, rare, language and no explicit sex. There's healthy, honest attraction between the two main characters that is not skin deep and is based on plenty of mutual respect. Their relationship is as real as anything I have experienced--though I admit to never having been with anyone from Faerie. I am impressed with the quality of this writing. If ever I write fiction, I will work to bring this amount of quality, depth, and development into an equally concise amount of words.
